The Cambridge city centre pool reopened its doors on Monday after being closed for two months for a major £420,000 refurbishment carried out by Carmelcrest Limited.

The pool previously provided male and female changing areas and four small cubicles designed for families in addition to provision for disabled swimmers.  But after input from the city’s transgender community stating that some individuals felt uncomfortable changing in the family cubicles or the disabled changing rooms as they did not fall into either category, the changing area now consists of cubicles allocated within male, female and ‘gender neutral’ areas.

Recreational manager at Cambridge City Council Ian Ross said the new layout also takes into account the needs of the city’s Muslim women who would not want to change in a unisex area.  He also commended the work of Carmelcrest limited who he said delivered quality in time and within budget.

“Carmelcrest have been a pleasure to work with. This was a major project in a flagship facility for the Council and Carmelcrest demonstrated the flexibility and commitment needed to ensure the project was successfully completed within a tight time line and was delivered on budget,” He said.

“We are very pleased with the quality of the fixtures and fittings throughout and the overall look of the completed facilities. We look forward to working with them in the future".

The official relaunch of Parkside Swimming Pool took place on Thursday with Olympic swimmer Leon Taylor, who won silver in Athens in 2004. Leon visited the pool to mark the launch of the world’s biggest fundraising swim – the Swimathon Weekend.
